About the Teacher
Nicole Charles is currently pursuing her Doctorate Degree in flute
performance with Professor Katherine Borst Jones at the Ohio State
University, where she also completed her Masters in performance.  During her first
year as a DMA student she held a teaching assistantship in the OSU Flute Studio.
Ms. Charles completed her undergraduate degree with Professor Francile Bilyeu of
Virginia Commonwealth University.  She also studied with Dr. Susan Glaser,
Professor Jennifer Lawson-Debeic, and Dr. Takeaki Miyamae.

Representing the city of Worthington as a WIFA delegate, Ms. Charles visited
sister-city  Sayama, Japan in 2007.  Along with other musicians from Sayama, she
performed in a farewell ceremony and also had the opportunity to perform at several
of the schools.   During her second week in Japan, Ms. Charles studied with Toshio
Takahashi at the Suzuki Talent Institute in Matsumoto.

As a member of the Stratosphere Flute Quartet, Ms. Charles performed at the 2007
National Flute Association Convention in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  This summer,
the quartet will again be featured  at the NFA convention in Kansas City in a flute
quartet recital.  Ms. Charles competed in the 2006 Central Ohio Flute Association
Flute Festival Young Artist Competition.  She also tied for a second place win in the
2006 Women in Music of Columbus Scholarship Competition.  Along with the other
winners, she was featured in the Huntington Concert Series at Capital University.  At
the 2004 National Flute Association Convention, Ms. Charles had the wonderful
opportunity to perform as a member of the OSU Flute Troupe under the direction of
Mr. Tom Kennedy.

Mrs. Charles maintains a flute studio in Columbus, Ohio and is a certified
Suzuki Flute teacher.  She received her certification from the SAGWA (Suzuki
Association of Greater Washington) Flute Institute under the instruction of
Mrs. Laura Larson, Mr. Kenichi Ueda, and Dr. Takeaki Miyamae.  During the
summer of 2006 she studied at the SAGWA Institute under the tutelage of Dr.
Toshio Takahashi, founder of the Suzuki Flute Method. In addition to her home
studio, Mrs. Charles also teaches at the Ohio Contemporary Chinese School (OCCS).

Encouraging students to be active musicians in the community, many of her students
are members of area orchestras and bands.  Several students won auditions and hold
positions with OMEA and College Honor Bands,  OMEA Regional Orchestra, Cadet
Orchestra, Columbus Youth Symphony Orchestra, Junior Winds, and Columbus
Youth Symphonic Band.

Her studio was featured at the 2005, 2007, and 2008 Columbus Asian Festival, the
2006 Akron Flute Festival, The Central Ohio Flute Association Flute Fest (2006,
2007, 2008), the Columbus Park of Roses Festival (2007, 2008), and the Columbus
Zoo.  She performed as a soloist and with Dr. Takeaki Miyamae at the 2007 Asian
Festival where she also directed the North Star Flute Ensemble in a performance of
Old and New China by Alan Leech.  This year the flute choir presented a short recital
of Japanese folk and anime melodies at the Asian Festival and the 2008 OSU
Japanese Spring Festival.

In addition to her studio and recitals, Ms. Charles performs regularly with
