My experience working with various ages and abilities has led me to believe that
everyone has the potential to develop musical ability and appreciation through
flute study. I have had wonderful opportunities and teachers in my career. It is
my intention that this diverse educational and performance background will
provide many opportunities for my own students.
Dr. Nicole Charles graduated with her Doctorate Degree in flute
performance with Professor Katherine Borst Jones at the Ohio State
University, where she also completed her Masters in performance under a
teaching assistantship. Ms. Charles completed her undergraduate degree
with Professor Francile Bilyeu of Virginia Commonwealth University. She
also studied with Dr. Susan Glaser, Professor Jennifer Lawson-Debeic, and
Dr. Takeaki Miyamae.
As a finalist, Ms. Charles competed in the 2006 Central Ohio Flute Association Flute
Festival Young Artist Competition. She also tied for a second place win in the 2006
Women in Music of Columbus Scholarship Competition. Along with the other
winners, she was featured in the Huntington Concert Series at Capital University. At
the 2004 National Flute Association Convention, Ms. Charles had the wonderful
opportunity to perform as a member of the OSU Flute Troupe under the direction of
Mr. Tom Kennedy.
Mrs. Charles maintains a flute studio in Columbus, Ohio and is a certified
Suzuki Flute teacher. She received her certification from the SAGWA (Suzuki
Association of Greater Washington) Flute Institute under the instruction of
Mrs. Laura Larson, Mr. Kenichi Ueda, and Dr. Takeaki Miyamae. This year she
studied at the SAGWA Institute under the tutelage of Dr. Toshio Takahashi, founder
of the Suzuki Flute Method. In addition to her home studio, Mrs. Charles also
teaches at the Ohio Contemporary Chinese School and the Jefferson Academy of
Music at OSU.
Encouraging students to be active musicians in the community, many of her students
are members of area orchestras and bands. Several students won auditions with the
OMEA Regional Orchestra, Cadet Orchestra, Columbus Youth Symphony
Orchestra, Junior Winds, and Columbus Youth Symphonic Band, and All-State Band.
Her studio was featured at the 2005 Columbus Asian Festival (where Mrs. Charles
was also a guest performer with Dr. Takeaki Miyamae), the Akron Flute Festival,
The Central Ohio Flute Association Flute Festival, the Columbus Park of Roses
Festival, and are frequent performers at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium.
In addition to her studio and recitals, Ms. Charles performs regularly with Air on
Strings, a flute and classical guitar duo with her husband, Lewis. She is also a member
of the Stratosphere Flute Quartet. You can view more information on these
performances and other upcoming events featuring Ms. Charles and her studio
throughout this website.
